Visiting Assisi means immersing yourself in a city where art, history, and spirituality coexist in every corner. At the end of August, this atmosphere will be further enriched by a special event: from August 28th to 30th, the lower square of the Basilica of San Francesco will host “Francis in the Art of the Madonna Gardens”, an international event dedicated to the 800th anniversary of the Saint’s death.
For the occasion, more than 50 Madonna artists will arrive in Assisi, called upon to interpret the figure and message of Francis through their personal artistic sensibilities.
A square that becomes an atelier
For three days, the square at the foot of the Basilica will be transformed into a large creative laboratory. Visitors will be able to witness the artists’ work directly and see the images take shape little by little.
40 individual works will be created, all inspired by the figure of Saint Francis, alongside a large collective composition of approximately 50 square meters. An opportunity to observe up close an artistic technique capable of transforming a simple space into a story made of images, colors and perspectives.
Kurt Wenner’s Creativity
The project will be artistically led by Kurt Wenner, an American artist internationally known for his experiments in three-dimensional urban art. He designed the large collective work dedicated to Saint Francis, created together with twelve madonnari.
The other creations will instead be entrusted to individual artists, who will be able to freely develop their own interpretation of the Franciscan theme.
An event to experience
A particularly interesting element concerns the support used for the works. The drawings will not be executed directly on the pavement of the square, but on a material specially prepared and designed to be preserved.
This will allow the creations to remain visible until September 1°, also giving those arriving in Assisi in the following days the chance to admire the final result.
